    Internship Insurance Abroad:
    The Complete Guide

Everything you need to know about internship insurance, liability, and medical coverage during your internship abroad.

    Why specialized internship insurance?

A standard travel insurance policy is often not sufficient for an internship abroad. The most important reasons to take out a special package are:

    Internship & Work

Damage you cause during working hours is excluded from normal policies.

    Long Duration

Standard insurances often cover max 60 days continuous stay.

    Medical Costs

Covers costs above the UK rate (needed in USA, Switzerland, private clinics).

    The Basics: GHIC / EHIC

UK residents can access state healthcare in Europe with a GHIC (Global Health Insurance Card) or a valid EHIC. This covers medically necessary treatment.

Note: Not a substitute for insurance

GHIC/EHIC is not an alternative to travel insurance. It does not cover private medical healthcare or costs such as mountain rescue or being flown back to the UK (repatriation).

Always take out appropriate travel insurance with healthcare cover.

    Work & Liability

This is the most forgotten part. Suppose you spill coffee on your boss's laptop, or you make a mistake causing financial loss to the company.

    • Personal Liability:

Covers damage you cause to others in your free time.

    • Professional Liability (Internship):

Crucial! Covers damage during working hours. Many 'standard' travel insurances exclude this.

    Travel Insurance & SOS

Annual multi-trip insurance is often not enough for an internship of 5 or 6 months. Pay attention to the following points:

    Maximum Trip Duration

Many policies cover max 31, 60, or 90 days. For a 5-month internship you need a 'long-stay' or 'backpacker' policy.

    Repatriation

Medical transport back to the UK (air ambulance) costs thousands of pounds. Ensure this is fully covered.
